17: Beer Wine Babies
Hybrids to try this summer!
Hi, it’s me again!
Most of you know that I have been working in the beer space, but my ties with wine have a tight grip on my soul. So, obviously, I had to create a way to talk about both of these beverages that we know and love.
Naturally, I was perusing a bottle shop called Bossanova on one of my days off. I know both owners through work, so they were talking to me about some new product they had received. After picking up a beautiful bottle of Piquette, I ventured to their frosty beer fridge. I’m not as well-versed in beer, so I looked to their Beer Sommelier for recommendations. He pointed out that Burdock Brewery has a can called Good Grapes, which ferments alongside Niagara White grapes. It was juicy, had a stunning citrus aroma, and was almost reminiscent of a white gummy bear on the palate.
Overall, I was pleased.
I was further intrigued when I was looking at Burdock Brewery’s website, and saw that they sell more bottles that are a marriage of beer and wine. I mean, it seems like a no-brainer that this relationship would work; however, it only started gaining popularity in 2018.
It’s exciting to me that beer drinkers can be exposed to the versatility of wine grapes, and even learn to enjoy them without realizing it. For example, if you like a beer wine hybrid with Viognier, the next time you’re at a liquor store, you can pick up a bottle of Viognier. It’s a softer introduction if you’re not super comfortable with the daunting wine aisles.
Here are my recommendations for some really groovy beer wine hybrids to try this summer:
ERO V from Burdock Brewery
P.S. Sauvignon Blanc Sour from Merit Brewing
Cuvée Spiff Spiff from Sonnen Hill
Grendel’s Revenge from Indie Ale House
